Looking back 20 years: IX FINA World Masters Championships 2002

It was during March 20 years ago that a team of over 25 swimmers from North Shore Master Swimmers (NSMS) participated in the IX FINA World Masters Championships 2002.

Held at the QEII pool in Christchurch, over 2,300 swimmers from 50 different countries competed. NSMS swimmers had a highly successful meet, setting numerous New Zealand Masters Swimming (NZMS) records, as well as some world records.

Standout performers were:

  • Kath Johnstone, 85 - 89 years: 5 x top 3 places, all NZMS records
  • Dix Ozier, 45 - 49 years: 4 x top 3 places, 2 x NZMS records and 1 x world record
  • Barry Young, 60 - 64 years: 4 x top 3 places, 4 x world records
  • Dix Ozier, Ian Gunthorp, Claire Paterson, Lyn Jobbins, Mixed Medley relay 200 - 239 years: 3rd place, NZMS record

The crowning glory was the triumph of the NSMS six-pack relay team.  For those unfamiliar with this race, the key feature is the requirement for the swimmer to scull a can of beer after completing their swim leg before the next swimmer can start.  The can must be upended on the swimmer's head to demonstrate its emptiness.  The team of Mark Saunders, Robert Redford, Dix Ozier, Barry Young, Ian Gunthorp and Russell Jones were victorious over all-comers in the event.

Current members of the club from back then include Don and Joan Bidwell, Liz Davidson, Ian Gunthorp, Russell Jones, Kevin Kench (founding & life member) Jan O'Donnell, Sue Pollard and Robert Redford.

Team members who are sadly no longer with us include Kath Johnstone, Linden Kenyon (not in team photo), Les O'Donnell (non-swimming supporter) and Barry Young.

Lasting memories and a great time had by all!
